History and facts about WiLab

WiLAB (Wireless Communications Laboratory) has been founded by Prof. Oreste Andrisano as a result of the tight cooperation between the National Council of Research (CNR) and the University of Bologna. It represents the natural evolution of the previous CSITE - CNR (°) Research Center, which merged into the IEIIT - CNR (°°) Institute in 2002.
WiLab includes professors and researchers who are well known at international level; most of them are involved in scientific management of international conferences and magazines. Moreover, Network of excellence at European level and COST activities have been promoted and coordinated within WiLab.
Different cooperations have been activated with scientific bodies such as MIT, DLR, UCSD, Texas University and the almost totality of European Universities.

The research activity developed within WiLab overcomes the traditional separation between Information and Communication Systems and is mainly focused on the following issues:

  • Cellular Communication toward 4G
  • Digital Video over Wireless
  • FPGA and DSP for Communications
  • Short Range Communications and Sensor Networks
  • Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

  • Indoor localization techniques and immersive communication systems
  • Remote Access to instrumentation
  • E-Learning

WiLab researchers, in particular, carry out their activities, both theoretical and experimental, in the framework of national and international projects, in tight cooperation with industrial partners, such as

The mesh network installed at the University of Bologna, which includes also a UMTS femtocell subnetwork, is also available as a test bed. This is the natural evolution of the wired FDDI and ATM networks installed at the University of Bologna in the ‘90 by the group led by Prof. Andrisano, which has been enriched in the following with WiFi and Hyperlans networks.

As far as the experimental activity is concerned, digital transmission systems have been tested with particular emphasis to digital video transmission and echo cancellation for digital repeaters.
Telemeasurement has also been deeply investigated; WiLAB researchers, in particular, developed a remote access platform based on a client server architecture which allows an easy and fast remote configuration of instrumentation and digital circuits through web virtual interfaces.

This activity was the fundamental step that brought also to the foundation of the CNIT(°°°) Labnet laboratory in Naples.

WiLAB has also been included in the framework of the Laboratories of CNIT.

The Lab received the award for the best project in Europe concerning elearning.
